Department Description 

The Flight Systems Department, 05424, manages projects that support our nations Conventional Prompt Global Strike (CPGS) program. Specifically, we support the development of flight systems intended to demonstrate our nations ability to strike high-value targets anywhere on the globe within a short period of time. These flight systems involve a tight-knit, multi-disciplinary teams supporting concept-to-flight project timelines approximately 24 to 36 months in duration.

Job Summary 

Department 05424 has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer to support our hardware realization activities. These hardware realization efforts encompass conceptualization, design, analysis (primarily structural with some modal and thermal), design definition, fabrication oversight, assembly/integration, flight certification testing, and supporting fielding operations. Some travel will be required to support project meetings, reviews, and field/flight tests. 

Required 

-- Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a relevant discipline; or a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a relevant discipline plus three or more years of applicable work experience.
--Experience with the design, analysis, and testing of complex mechanical systems.
--Some travel will be required.
--Ability to obtain and maintain a required US DOE security clearance. 

Desired 

--Pro/Engineer, Pro/E Mechanica, SolidWorks, Solidworks Simulation, LabVIEW, Mathcad.
--Statics and strengths: beam theory, plate theory, elastic/plastic, mechanical failure criteria, bolt pattern design, etc.
--Structural Dynamics: vibration theory, modal behavior, isolation design.
--Dynamics/kinematics.
--Finite element theory, direct stiffness theory.
--Heat transfer and fluid flow (aerodynamics background is helpful).
--Mechanical properties of aerospace materials.
--Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
--Machine shop experience.
--Willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary project team environment.
--Interest in hands-on activities associated with mechanical systems.
--Ability to prepare and deliver technical presentations for both internal and external customers. 

Security Clearance 

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
