Role synopsis
The Second Officer Acts under the supervision of the Master and the Chief Officer within the deck department to carry out navigation, cargo and deck operations.
The Second Officer has the authority to take action to ensure the safety of the vessel and crew and to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the role. They must seek guidance as directed by the Fleet Operating System and the Standing Orders issued by the Master.
Key accountabilities
1. Maintain a navigational and anchor watch in compliance with applicable requirements including the management of lookouts.
2. Maintain a cargo watch in compliance with all applicable requirements including the management of the deck watch.
3. To carry out Deck Department duties, including mooring and anchoring operations and
taking of stores, as directed by the Master.
4. To act as the main Navigating Officer and prepare comprehensive berth-to-berth passage plans as per the requirements of BP Shipping, including the laying off of courses on charts and providing all information necessary for the safe passage of the vessel.
5. Be responsible for all bridge equipment, ensuring all defects are reported to the Master, Chief Engineer or ETO.
6. Maintain and keep corrected and up to date the chart outfit and all nautical publications.
7. Assist the Master and Chief Engineer in completing reporting requirements by providing navigation and weather data.
8. Conform with all the requirements of the Fleet OMS applicable to the rank.
9. Make the correct and appropriate entries into the ships log books.
10. To act as Safety Officer and promote health and safety standards on board as required.
11. Act as a member of the Shipboard Emergency Response and Fire Fighting Team in accordance with the muster lists and shipboard contingency plans.
12. Operate when required ships Life Saving and Fire Fighting Appliances for example life boats, fire extinguishers, SCBA and EEBD.
13. To carry out duties in accordance with the vessel’s Ship Security Plan.
15. To become familiar with the roles and duties of the Chief Officer.

1. Deck OOW
Essential experience and job requirements
1. Full understanding of the international rules for the prevention of collisions at sea;
2. Full understanding of all bridge, cargo and mooring systems;
3. Full understanding of all safety and emergency systems and equipment on-board;
4.Full understanding of the duties of a Safety Officer;
5. Working knowledge of the vessel’s propulsion and manoeuvring capabilities;
6. Working knowledge of all computer based reporting and word processing software systems applicable to the role
7. A high level of verbal and written communication skills in English.
Eligibility Requirements
Individuals who work in the BP European fleet are generally domiciled in the UK, Ireland or Poland.
