~~Summary:
The Plant Floor Manager is responsible for managing the inventory and building the company’s products to meet the demands of the production schedule. Responsible for maintaining product build quality, as well as the management and coordination of plant operations including personnel, assembly, receiving, stores, tool room and maintenance consistent to improve the facility’s performance in shipping, inventory, and throughput. The Plant Floor Manager will also be an active part and role in product assembly, responsible for assembling and testing mechanical assemblies, subassemblies and processing appropriate documentation, while keeping the work area clean and abiding by all health and safety requirements. This individual fills the roles of Manufacturing Engineer, Inventory Control Clerk and Shipping and Receiving until company growth warrants these dedicated positions, and should possess the following competencies: leadership, performance management, problem solving/analysis, results driven, communication proficiency, time management, technical capacity, learning orientation, and detail oriented.

Primary Responsibilities
Production
  • Plan, organize and direct the activities of the Production/Assembly function. Responsible for the performance of all Production/Assembly department functions: Manufacturing Engineering, Plant Engineering, Planning and Control, Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Create Production schedules from sales forecasts and sales orders.
  • Successfully oversee and execute activities and workflow to meet Production schedules, shipment dates and quality objectives.
  • Report to Company management regularly or as required on performance to the Production schedule and input to the Company business plan and other similar documents as required.
  • Hire, supervise and direct Production department personnel.
  • Make the best use of the company assets, including floor space, process and equipment, and make constant improvements in their utilization.
  • Approve/reject engineering changes based on impact to production. Make management aware of all impacts.
  • Responsible for accurate forecasting and budgets for the plant floor needs and future needs.
  • Consistently meet targets of productivity, quality, delivery performance, cost reduction and Health, Safety and Environmental.
  • Establish, improve, monitor and report on production performance metrics such as direct labor hours, on-time delivery, employee productivity, service parts delivery response time, and employee errors.
  • Schedule production labor based on the workload, material availability and experience of the personnel to complete the assigned tasks.
  • Maintain a clean “tour-ready” facility.
  • Receive sales order via inventory system (SAP B1), create work orders and manage change control through work order close out with Finance department.
  • Assemble and test mechanical assemblies, subassemblies and complete units following process assembly documentation. Document all build data, such as part and serial numbers, in build documentation.
  • Provide suggestions and feedback to improve processes at work cell.
  • Be able to manage high degree of product change during the build process.
  • Feedback to Engineering department on design for manufacturability suggestions.
  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Create and maintain the Production Assembly Documentation (PAD) for each product variant.
  • Document and maintain all manufacturing processes to streamline processes and improve yields. Obtain approval prior to deviating and ensure that corrective actions are implemented.
  • Determine assembly tooling requirements, design tooling, create tool order request and oversee the manufacture of tools.
  • Develop and maintain facility plan.
  • Establish, document and maintain standard operating procedures for production and non-production operations (i.e., teardown, parts cleaning, rebuilds, prototypes, etc.).
  • Supervisory
  • Guide the development of Production department personnel to jointly accomplish company and department objectives.
  • Lead the development and implementation of activities, programs and procedures that foster improvement in the labor/management climate and support the culture change efforts in the company and department.
  • Establish clear and regular communication and expectations for personnel.
  • Establish and maintain training and cross-training program for Production personnel.
  • Enforce all policies for the company and department.
  • Approve employee timesheets and coordinate overtime authorization on an as-needed basis.
  • Continually review the performance of department personnel in light of their job description and career interest. Complete annual formal reviews and make recommendations for salary changes, promotions, etc.
  • ~~Inventory Control
  • Monitor stock/inventory levels and communicate with Purchasing and other department leads to ensure all resources are available to meet Production requirements.
  • Maintain accurate inventory levels and ensure compliance with company procedures for inventory transfers of nonconforming items.
  • Manage the inventory inside three warehouses, limiting lost time and contaminating the production floor.
  • Shipping and Receiving
  • Coordinate shipping activities to ensure timely delivery of customer orders, using craters, containers and various shippers and methods.
  • Prepare and coordinate necessary documentation (commercial invoices, bill of lading, certificate of origin) when applicable for international and local shipping to ensure accurate and on-time delivery of goods.
  • Coordinate receiving activities to ensure that all material is received in the SAP B1 system and placed in the appropriate virtual and physical warehouse. Work with Finance and Quality on receipt of inventory and transfers of parts inter-department.
  • Coordinate with carriers to satisfy customers and supplier’s special packaging, crating and shipping methods for both local and international.
  • Continuously seek more efficient and economical methods of shipping and receiving to meet company needs and facility requirements.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with various carriers and brokers to meet the company’s shipping and receiving needs.
  • Negotiate with carriers and brokers for the best possible rate.
  • Unload and load trucks using forklifts and other equipment.
  • Manage forklift maintenance.
  • Safety
  • Develop, maintain and enforce the Safety Program.
  • Assure the company meets all MIOSHA, EPA and Washtenaw County regulations.
  • Maintain and promote a safe work environment.
  • Maintain and promote safe material handling practices.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance and equipment calibration to ensure the quality of the product and avoid work stoppage.
  • ~~6. Direct the Safety Training Program, including Right-to-Know, forklift certification, overhead crane certification, PPE, etc.
  • Strive to continuously improve safety.
  • Qualifications
    Minimum of 3-5 years experience in a supervisory role in a low-volume manufacturing/production environment.
    Degree in Engineering a strong plus.
    Experience with engines, high tolerance parts, cleanliness requirements a strong benefit.
    Experience with prototypes, low volume product, high degree of product change is preferred.
    Experience in moving from R&D to volume production a bonus.
    Experience with inventory management.
    Experience shipping domestically and overseas.
    Experience with MRP/ERP systems such as SAP B1 desired, but not required.
    Computer literate, proficient in the use of Windows, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Project, MRP/ERP systems, SolidWorks and the internet.

    Requirements
    Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
    Must be able to stand, bend and work over large assemblies.
    Forklift certified.
    Overhead crane certified.
    Ability to use hand and power tools.

    Core Skills
    Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
    Process documentation, record management, ISO/QS.
    Audit and audit assessments, evaluate processes for compliance.
    Hands-on work ethic.
    Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage personnel, multiple projects, prioritize tasks and complete assignments within expected time frames.
